Caution:  Falling Object Lab

Purpose: To measure acceleration of a dropped book.

Equipment: motion detector, TI 84 calculator, ring stand, and a physics book.

Procedure: First set up the motion detector to the ring stand and connect the calculator. Then have one person hold the physic book and when the detector beeps, that person should drop the book and move out of the way as fast as possible. Then look at the graph and if you are not happy with it, try the procedure again until you are happy with the graph created.

Conclusion: The purpose is to find the acceleration of the falling book. To do this I took the 2nd derivative of the quadratic regression equation.

Original: 5.33066x2 + -3.40398x + .61751

1st derivative: 10.66132x + -3.4098

2nd derivative/ acceleration: 10.66132 m/s2
